The Year from Hell

It all began through a series of unfortunate events: taking in my sister, a court case, DCF, and parents straight out of a horror movie. With the help of my partner we were keeping it together, but it was a rough year that ended with my sister in rehab and myself being unable to go back to the career I loved.

Emergency ambulance vehicle with flashing lights stopped in traffic on a city street during dusk, surrounded by parked and moving cars, with trees lining the road.

I had been an EMT for 4 years and I planned to be in EMS for another 40 until I got COVID the second time. I was unlucky enough to end up with long COVID and body aches that never left. I didn’t feel safe lifting patients and risking their safety or my partners. I waited it out as long as I could, but had to admit defeat.

Open-plan office with multiple desks, computers, and employees working. Large windows along one wall and bookshelf dividers.

I tried multiple different types of jobs: telemarketing, brand ambassador, working for an animal shelter, front desk in a medical office, etc. It all seemed to not fit for one reason or another and by the last one I honestly felt hopeless.

The Light in the Storm: DND

During the past 2 years, all that has helped me stay steady is my partner, my cats, and DND. When my partner and I started planning our DND campaign, I was so excited and leaned into one of the things I'm best at: logistics.

I created documents to plan our campaign, our plot points, and our hopeful acts. Then I began to create interactive forms for us to both reference and our players to use if they wanted to immerse themself in the campaign hands on. Next came the guild cards, trackers, feedback forms, and finally documents to share session notes.

The Result

We realized that all of this really helped us as we co-DM'd our campaign.

So now, I am sharing this with you all. We know how hard it can be to be a DM, especially a new DM, and this is what I can do to make it just a little easier for you! Some of the materials (e.g. the income/spending tracker) are also extremely useful for your players and increases longevity of their character sheets.

Quest On!
